Abstract

This article addresses the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) applied to asphalt mixtures- traditional and emergent- such as hot-mix asphalt (HMA) and asphalt rubber, comparing their differences, advantages and disadvantages. Through a progression of the LCA analysis, starting from its general description following up to its application to the aforementioned materials, the objective is to evaluate the relevance of the use of asphalt rubber having as a criterion the environmental performance of its life cycle. Initiating from the literature review of the experience from other countries with the implementation of LCA, it was found that although there are significant differences, the overall performances tend to balance between themselves.
